Having Goals

My  husband and I often discuss our expectation that our children attend college. When we look back on our upbringings neither of us remember being given an option or being told emphatically we HAD to go to college. It just was. It was as if we were both somehow given the message that college follows high school. END. OF. STORY.   We want our children to have the freedom to follow their dreams but also understand the value of an education. But how do we give our own children this message?

After a recent conversation with the 3 Whiners, I have a feeling we are off to a good start...

Of course, the conversation wasn’t that heavy or deep.  It started one day on the way home from preschool when I asked each of them the age old question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
Buddy said he was considering being a police officer or something similar.
The Bear said she thought she would be a princess.
And then we asked The Zaz. She said she would like to be a cake. When I asked if she meant she would like to eat a cake, she got very upset with me and in her strongest little voice said, "No I going to BE a cake."

Like I said we are off to a good start….
